Mohandas Gandhi is not only an important figure in the history of South Asia, he is also well-known for inspiring non-violent movements for civil rights and justice across the world. As a result, he serves as a counterpoint to someone like Mao Zedong, who famously, or perhaps infamously, said: "power grows form the barrel of a gun." Without a doubt, Gandhi is one of the most important actors of the 20th century and his leadership needs to be understood if one is to make sense of the world today.
