Development: Industrial Societies and the Developing World
History of Development
Five hundred years ago we could not talk about developed and developing nations. All countries were approximately equal in terms of wealth. To be sure, there were usually vast differences of wealth between the people of each country. Each nation had a small wealthy upper class and a large underclass, or lower class often living on the edge of starvation and disaster. However, there was little difference in terms of the wealth between countries of the world. This began to change in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as Western Europe and North America began to move away from the rest of the world in terms of wealth and development. Today there are a handful of truly highly developed nations while the rest of the world struggles to reach the levels of development present in North America and Western Europe at the turn of the 20th century.
