To a large extent, the physical geography of China kept it relatively isolated from other civilizations of the ancient world. Even as late as the 16th century, China was little understood by the people of Europe, and it was considered an exotic place, filled with mystery and wonder. To be sure, there had been some interaction between China and Europe, but in an age well before mechanized transportation, China was an incredibly long and difficult journey from Europe. It was made all the more difficult by the imposing physical barriers that stood between China and the outside world.
