Group Work: Culture Skits
In this lesson you will divide into groups and write, design, and perform skits that express and communicate the central ideas of our study of culture. There are five topics and each group will write and perform a skit for each topic. The topics are:
1. Comparing Religions
2. Cultural Change
3. Economic Systems
4. Political Systems
5. Stages of Cultural Development
There are three primary resources that you should use to craft your skit – the textbook, the page on my Website, and the charts or study guides you developed. In order to write and perform a skit about your topic, you need to understand the topic thoroughly. Essentially you will be using the skit to teach the concepts to the rest of the class.
You will have four days in class to work with your group to learn and write your skit. Below I have outlined some ideas of how you might structure your skit, however, you DO NOT have to use my ideas. If you have another idea that the group would like to try, please do it.
Comparing Religions – You have to compare and contrast the four major religions that we studied in class. One way that you might do it is to set up a scenario where representatives from each religion have a meeting to discus how they might get along together in their country. Another idea might be a person choosing a religion, so they need to gather information on various religions.
Cultural Change – This topic has a wide range of ideas that you can focus on. You might focus on technology and how it changes a culture, such as a person learning new ideas. Or, you might bring in ideas from one culture diffusing to another culture. You could write a skit around the dying out of certain cultural traditions. For you skit you might illustrate a family, or a small town struggling with these types of ideas. It could be as basic as a family struggling with changing ideas about the role of women 100 years ago.
Economic Systems – For this topic you have to describe and illustrate the three major economic systems. One idea might be a leader of a new country trying to determine which economic system will work best for the country so they meet with three experts on each of the systems. You may also have three people meet on a cruise ship and each of them is from a country that has a different economic system. Lastly, you can design a debate between representatives of each of the three systems.
Political Systems- In this topic, like the economic systems, you have to describe and illustrate the three major political systems (democracy, monarchy, and dictatorship). The ideas for a scenario are similar to the economic systems: a leader of a new country trying to determine which political system will work best for the country so they meet with three experts on each of the systems. You may also have three people meet on a cruise ship and each of them is from a country that has a different political system. You can design a debate between representatives of each of the three systems. Or, you may have a country that is a monarchy but has people arguing for a new system.
Stages of Cultural Development – With this topic you will essentially be doing four mini-skits – one for each of the stages of cultural development. You’ll want to use signs or a narrator to announce the different stages. In each stage you should emphasize the benefits and how they helped change the way of life for people.
